PRETTY GIRLS | |
Human
tragedies appear even in this documentary. Although theoretically, the topic
of the film would have nothing to do with tragedies as András DÉR and László
HARTAI's film is about the Hungarian beauty contest held in 1985. And you
know, it is not a tragic series of events, when a great deal of beautiful
girls appears on stage for being judged, who the most beautiful is all around
our country.
Certainly nobody - not even the film authors - could suspect in advance that this event discussed in numerous ways, places, occasions and several genres yet became a drama. However, watching the film and being aware that the shots have been recorded during the beauty contest, the impression is not surprising at all that perhaps, it would have been much of a wonder if this beauty contest had not been accompanied by some irredeemable tragedy. Telling the truth, what infuriated me is not the various numbers, data and rates, though it was shameful enough how the girls, the candidates and even the finalists have been treated, the way they have been served, catered, paid and accommodated while the organisers lived in the lap of luxury. And what was a crying shame is the stick-in-the-mud coarseness, which can be perceived through the whole management of the event. In fact, the business, the money and the big fiddle covered by the swarming officiousness have been really infuriating as well as the attitude representing that man can strike lucky right here and right now, certain companies can hit the ball, here is a good chance to score success, make a career and present world sensation. Actually, the whole thing was based on an absolutely incapable organising system, an amusingly untalented group of people and fascinating greed for gain expressing in advance that here the so-called enterprise culture was to gain ground. Some of us - a lot, indeed - believed that at this time it would be a professional matter but it turned out soon that it is not only not professional but a pitifully trashy and cheap matter, even in the Hungarian relations and circumstances and those few honest individuals, who perhaps would have been able to attain this ado properly, found themselves out of the "star" group. It is a shameful record about some of our Hungarian fellow citizens, who could be cool only here as in the professional sphere /in the West/ such guys would have not been allowed to get close to any business. That world is also tough but it is compulsory to be talented over there even for the jackals. PRETTY GIRLS Hungarian, colourful documentary. |
